The 11+ exam is part of the secondary school selection process. They select by academic ability, including state-funded grammar schools and selective independent schools.
Your child only needs to take the test once, even if you're applying to more than one school that uses the test.
The Wirral Admissions Test is used by four grammar schools:
The Wirral Admissions Test consists of two papers, taken on the same day with a short break between. These papers follow the GL Assessment.
Think word games - sequences, Scrabble, Wordle - but using an extensive vocabulary, requiring the student to know both the spelling and the meaning of words.
-- Examples can range from 'tap' to 'reticent' --
They assess logic, vocabulary, and code-breaking skills through topics like synonyms, antonyms, analogies, and letter/number sequences.
Non-verbal reasoning involves analysing visual information and solving problems using shapes, diagrams and pictures. Non-verbal reasoning tests several skills, including logic and problem-solving, spatial awareness, and the ability to identify patterns and rules.
Non-verbal reasoning questions can be confusing to those who have never come across them before.
The mathematics on the assessment could be from Year 5 or Year 6, so it's really important to be confident and fluent with your maths in school before making the jump to 11+.
Key topics include:
Fractions; Percentages; Algebra; Ratio; Times Tables; Decimals; Prime Numbers; perimeter/area/volume; symmetry; angles; and problem-solving and logic are also important

Preparing for the Wirral 11+ (GL Assessment) involves focused practice on the topics above, typically starting in Year 4 or 5.
Key strategies include using timed practice papers to build stamina, strengthening core numeracy/literacy skills, and familiarizing children with question formats.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
The 11+ Test takes place in September so we spend our July and August getting in lots of realistic practice tests.
Two mocks a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am-12noon
Our tutors are experienced educators who are committed to helping students succeed. They work closely with each student to meet their unique needs and helps them achieve their goals.
The wellbeing of young students is also key to passing the assessment. We ensure regular short breaks, access to water, and encouragement to keep stress levels low.
The 11+ often consists of two 50-minute tests with a combination of maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning
There will be the question booklet, and an Answer Sheet where answers to questions must be marked on this separate sheet.
