The 11+ exam is part of the secondary school selection process. They select by academic ability, including state-funded grammar schools and selective independent schools.
The 11+ has moved away from predictable question types and is now testing how well students can think, not just how well they’ve practised. We still use practice papers, but we focus much more on building strong maths, reading, and reasoning skills so students can handle unfamiliar questions confidently.
Your child will sit two 50-minute papers with a short break between them:
Paper one: verbal reasoning
Paper two: mathematics and non -verbal reasoning
The Wirral Admissions Test is used by four grammar schools:
The Wirral Admissions Test consists of two online assessments, taken on the same day with a short break between. These papers follow the Quest Assessment, a new style for the Wirral for 2026.
You need to register to sit the 11+ Test. Online registration opens on 1st May 2026 and closes on 1st June 2026. You can register here and the test will take place in September:
Every Tuesday and Thursday in the Summer holidays, we will be running a mock and workshop from 10am-12pm. You can select dates and book sessions here:
Think word games - sequences, Scrabble, Wordle - but using an extensive vocabulary, requiring the student to know both the spelling and the meaning of words.
-- Examples can range from 'tap' to 'reticent' --
They assess logic, vocabulary, and code-breaking skills through topics like synonyms, antonyms, analogies, and letter/number sequences.
Non-verbal reasoning involves analysing visual information and solving problems using shapes, diagrams and pictures. Non-verbal reasoning tests several skills, including logic and problem-solving, spatial awareness, and the ability to identify patterns and rules.
Non-verbal reasoning questions can be confusing to those who have never come across them before.
The mathematics on the assessment is up to Year 5, so it's really important to be confident and fluent with your maths in school before making the jump to 11+.
Key topics include:
Fractions; Percentages; Algebra; Ratio; Times Tables; Decimals; Prime Numbers; perimeter/area/volume; symmetry; angles; and problem-solving and logic are also important
